ABOUT
Kind Seas is a studio + shop located on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in the town of Bonavista, in Newfoundland. It is a space where you can come to take pause, and be inspired by meaningful handmade works that will recall your time spent by the sea.
Kind Seas features products that are skillfully designed and crafted by independent artists based in Atlantic Canada and beyond. It is also home to the studio of jewellery designer K. Claire MacDonald.
Our Story
Kind Seas began as a dream–the kind that occupies that space in your heart for things you hope to accomplish "someday". Born and raised in Nova Scotia, owner K. Claire MacDonald followed her life-long love of art and design into a career as a jewellery designer. After graduating from NSCAD Univeristy in 2012, she lived and worked in Toronto for a number of years, gaining work experience in the jewellery and fine art industries. She eventually made her way back to Halifax where she began her own jewellery business.
Growing up, Claire often visited family in St. John's and Port au Port NL, but it wasn't until 2016 that Claire found herself in Bonavista for the first time. She was immediately drawn to the unique town on the edge of the Atlantic that was beginning to gain momentum with a new generation of artists and entrepreneurs.
It wasn't long before Claire couldn't shake the idea of moving to Bonavista to open a studio and shop for her jewellery business. After dreaming for years of living and working by the ocean, she finally took the plunge and opened Kind Seas in June 2022.
Jewellery inspired by place
The jewellery studio of K. Claire MacDonald is nestled behind the retail shop at Kind Seas, Claire draws inspiration from the unique coastal landscape of the Atlantic Canada, incorporating a mix of organic forms and soft, graceful lines. Each piece is skillfully crafted by hand, and designed to serve as a special memento of a place that can be rugged and windswept, but also beautiful. Her designs have a timeless elegance, making them perfect for everyday wear.
